Keon Catchings-Shelby
Dr. Keon Catchings-Shelby serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Jackson State University. Her career began with impactful roles as an elementary school teacher and reading interventionist in both urban and rural communities across Mississippi.
With extensive experience in literacy education, Dr. Catchings-Shelby significantly influenced literacy outcomes during her tenure as a Literacy Coach for the Mississippi Department of Education. In this role, she utilized evidence-based practices to enhance literacy instruction by providing professional development to public school teachers and district leaders. Her dedication to advancing literacy extended beyond classrooms, fostering meaningful change in educational systems and community engagement.
As a mentor and advisor, Dr. Catchings-Shelby has guided undergraduate and graduate students in meeting teacher education program requirements and preparing for certification exams. Her commitment to education and mentorship reflects her passion for shaping future educators.
Beyond academia, Dr. Catchings-Shelby serves as the Missionary Outreach Coordinator for her church, dedicating her time and leadership to uplifting her community. Among her many achievements, she values her family most. She finds daily inspiration and joy in her husband, Dr. Fredrick D. Shelby, and their two sons.
